Boundary House Fen, Saturday 8th July 2023

This weeks' blog was written by Eleanor D

The weather was cloudy but mild as we assembled for our session on Boundary House Fen on Frilford Golf course. We made our way carefully along the edge of the course as there was a big tournament on and the occasional golf ball was going wildly off course.

We were surprised at how much the reeds had grown up since our last visit. Rod was waiting for us and told us which areas needed cutting and the reeds clearing and stacking. Another task was to uproot hemlock from the edge of the fen before it could seed and spread further, so several of us set to work on that.

Just before break, the threatened rain began so we sheltered under the trees and kept relatively dry there. Most of us had brought waterproofs and Jim was well prepared. With his black cape and hat and carrying his scythe, he was a somewhat alarming sight.

At the end of the break some people decided to go home as it was still raining. However, the hardier among us were well rewarded as the rain stopped as soon as they had gone.

We then moved on to various areas of the fen to rake and stack the reeds and managed to get most of the cut areas clear before it was time to collect up the tools and head back to the car park.
